Veitch on press releases

Just really enjoyed a blog post from Martin "nicest man in tech journalism" Veitch over at CIO.co.uk. I'll not detract too much from his readership figures (go on, read the whole thing here), but he makes a great point about the language of press releases that I've made myself on both sides of the PR/journalism divide:

The odd thing about most technology press releases is that they are written in a style used by almost nobody in the real world. People discuss very small things in incredible detail, use inappropriate or misappropriated words, and congratulate each other on alliances that are never followed up on. I don't blame PRs themselves: they can often write much better than journalists and are usually better educated, but they're working for The Man. PR people know it's daft and I know it's daft...
And Martin shows great awareness about his peers as well:
Heck, I don't mind getting the mails. I'm not one of those self-important old lags that write blogs about being the butt of poorly targeted missives...

We all know the type. But then he goes on to imagine what it would be like if the same flair for language were applied to famous events from history. Enjoy.
